Federico Otero’s early awards

Otero received recognition from the NHMA (National Housewares Manufacturing Association) whilst still a student in 1999 and 2000. Recognition followed throughout his early career, from Opus 2003, Owens-Illinois Liquor Bottle Design 2004, Colombian Furniture and Fashion Design 2003 and 2004, Macef 2004, International Bicycle Design 2004, Tag Heuer 2004, and Alternative Amazon Wood Furniture Design 2005. In 2007, Interior Design Magazine honoured his design the ‘Catacaos Ceiling Fixture’ with the 2007 Best of Year Award for Decorative Lighting.

Federico Otero’s Career

Otero’s career continued for companies and design studios including Tag Heuer and Jozeph Forakis until January 2007 when he opened ‘OTERO – Design Studio’ in Florida, USA. In August 2007 he opened ‘COCOON Fireplaces’ where he remains designer and managing director at both to date. A lot of sports legends choose his interior designs for their expensive luxury homes. And while Ronaldo and Messi make millions for simply kicking a ball across a field and can afford mansions, everybody else just has to find out which online betting site is the best and make money on football betting to afford such luxury houses.

Otero’s contribution to design include a wide spectrum covering lighting, furniture and luxury products, creating products that update the traditional. His CATACAOS Chair, from the Otero Design Studio, was inspired by the filigree jewellery trade in the city of Catacaos in Northern Peru and is as much about art as about a chair. Made exclusively from aluminium and polycarbonates the chair yields comfortably to the weight of each sitter.

Boyd Lighting's first LED fixture, La Reina Pendants was designed by Otero and was the winner of the Best of NeoCon 2009 Silver Award and winner of the IIDA/HD Expo 2009 Individual Lighting Fixture Award. Made from die-stamped stainless steel, the pendants are electro-polished on the outside which gives them a dazzling shine, while the interior is a white powder coat for added reflection.

Federico Otero’s work has been recognised in business, academia and the media. His work has also been featured internationally including Dwell, Interni, Vogue, Metropolis, Interior Design Magazine and CNN. He has also been published in "The best of CASACOR" year book featuring interior designs from Brazil, Sweden, Panama and Peru.

Most recently Otero obtained the Interior Innovation Design Award from the German Design Council for his fireplace line designed for Cocoon Fires.

Otero’s career has included exhibiting in the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum as a result of being one of the ten finalists chosen worldwide in the New York City Bicycle Rack Design Competition. He was also selected to represent Latin America as one of the designers for BID 2008, the first Ibero American Design festival in Madrid.
